In 1948, the Met Gala was introduced to the world as a way to raise money for the newly-founded Costume Institute and mark the opening of its annual exhibition. The Met Gala was formally known as the Costume Institute Gala and also known as Met Ball. This Gala is a fundraiser for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
Each year the event has a theme that is decided by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and for 2019, it was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’. This year’s theme was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”. This was widely considered to have introduced to the notion of ‘Camp’ to the mainstream.
‘The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,’
This year the ladies and gents lit the carpet up by showcasing their amazing outfits and some strange outfits from Kate Perry’s chandelier dress, Tiffany Haddish with her emergency chicken, Jared Leto carrying his own head to new celebrity couples making debut after marriage.
This year’s Met Gala was filled with some of the most outrageous outfits to date. The big couture brands like Gucci, Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, Thom Browne still rule the carpet as they had the most number of celebrities. This year the Gala was sponsored by Gucci and the creative director Alessandro Michele served as the co-host to the Gala.
