The popularity of the French Riviera is well established. For decades, the south of France has been a check-in point for some of the world’s most famous personalities, attracting an ever-increasing number of tourists in search of warmth, relaxation and a change of scenery, all in a dream setting. A very popular destination in summer, calm and pleasure can sometimes be hard to find. Especially when you’re looking to relax peacefully on the beach. But there are some isolated, unspoilt spots, far from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism. Do you want to know where they are? Then take note of the best secret beaches on the French Riviera, as presented here.
Between Nice and Monaco
What could be better than having everything you need to spend a dream day? Passable beach, on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula between Nice and Monaco, is sure to win you over. As well as being spared the influx of tourists, especially out of season, the beach itself boasts a restaurant and bar. The height of luxury, eating exquisite Mediterranean-inspired dishes with your feet in the crystal-clear water. You couldn’t be better off.
If you’re enjoying the day into the evening, sip one of the cocktails in the lounge bar while watching the unforgettable sunset. The beach can also be hired out for private events.
Between Monaco and Menton, the Plage du Buse in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is well worth a visit. A haven of peace, it is rarely visited, even in the middle of August. At one end of the cove is a little shack serving Italian food. This beach is ideal for a peaceful day out, enjoying the clear, warm water that is so much a part of the Mediterranean.
The wild and authentic beaches of the islands
While the coastline has a few secret spots, the islands also hide some even quieter corners of paradise.
Off the coast of Cannes, on the largest of the Lérins islands, Sainte-Marguerite is a little jewel case of greenery, lined with beaches and secluded coves. They are accessible by boat or via steep paths. The island is home to the imposing Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was once imprisoned. The beach at Sainte-Anne, opposite Cannes, is ideal for escaping the crowds on the French Riviera during the summer months. Its little bonus? Water sports activities are available for holidaymakers in search of adventure.
For even more tranquillity in an equally heavenly setting, the island of Saint-Honorat, just opposite the island of Sainte-Marguerite, is even less crowded. It is made up of several coves, including La Tonnelle, just a stone’s throw from the pier. Perfect if you’re travelling with the family, the shallow waters are ideal for children.
Head further west to discover the island of Porquerolles and its quiet spots. Notre-Dame beach is straight out of a postcard. Its crystal-clear water, fine sand, rocks and pine trees, which provide a little shade, are second to none. As it is fairly far from the village of Hyères, it is rarely visited, whatever the season. This beach is one of the best places on the French Riviera to recharge your batteries, away from it all, in absolute tranquillity.
Around Hyères
Not far from Hyères, you’ll find Léoube beach in Bormes-les-Mimosas. Getting to this little corner of paradise is well worth the effort. Léoube beach is located at the end of a small path, or directly by boat. This makes it one of the quietest beaches in the area.
This wild, unspoilt beach with its fine sand offers an idyllic setting: pine forest, shady areas and crystal-clear water. Everything you need to forget the hustle and bustle of the world just for a swim. At the end of the day, head to Château Léoube, a wine-growing estate, for a tasting of fabulous organic wines.
