Saint-Tropez is best known for its summer delights. However, there are also many advantages to discovering the town and its surroundings during the low season, which runs from October to April. And even if traffic is lighter and parking less scarce at this time of year, a private chauffeur remains your best ally for an ideal stay: he’ll be able to remain discreet, but also suggest restaurants, discotheques, places to visit or department stores.
Saint-Tropez and the surrounding area
The low season is perhaps the best time to enjoy the Tropezian way of life. The temperatures remain mild, the typical architecture and the sunsets, free of the crowds, are revealed more clearly, and you can hear the sound of the sea better… It’s still possible to dine on the terrace without suffering from the cold until late in the year. For those of our CLIENTS who prefer the nightlife, there’s always Gaïo or Caves du Roy, where you can sway to your heart’s content before being safely escorted home by Kingdom Limousines.
Although the autumn and winter months are not the best for long lazy days on the fine sand (except for those who love energising baths!), they are perfectly suited to short excursions in the surrounding area. Your private chauffeur can take you to the famous perfume factory in Grasse, or to the master glassmakers in Biot. You can also choose to enjoy a quiet, bucolic day in Saint-Paul de Vence, or the small villages in the hinterland. Or visit Antibes, Europe’s largest yachting port, to admire some of the world’s biggest yachts on the billionaires’ quay.
Or consider a visit to Cannes, with its three casinos and world-famous nightclubs. The Rue d’Antibes and the Croisette are packed with big-name retailers. Leave your shopping to your driver and visit the historic centre of Cannes, then admire the view of the port and the city from the Notre-Dame de l’Espérance church before heading back down to the Croisette for dinner.
A little further afield, but still within easy reach, are Nice’s museums (Cimiez, Chagall, Mamac, etc.), art galleries and gourmet restaurants. Here too, the climate remains mild all year round, allowing you to enjoy the city in a calmer mood than at the height of the season: admire the flower market on the Cours Saleya, the Russian Orthodox cathedral or the Promenade des Anglais. Warm up in one of the cafés in the old town for a socca. If the sea is mild, hire a boat for a trip to the surrounding islands; a local guide will be happy to tell you all about them.
Seasonal traditions of the French Riviera
If you’re in Saint-Tropez around Christmas, a visit to a santon-making workshop (the little figurines that go to make the Provençal nativity scenes, a veritable institution) is a must.
If you’re in the region in February, the Nice carnival is a must, with its huge floats. The third-largest carnival in the world brings the whole city to life for a fortnight! The party’s guaranteed to go on, and with a private chauffeur, you’ll be spared the hassle of parking and can make the most of the return journey.
Finally, there is one Mediterranean activity that is only permitted between November and April: sea urchin fishing. If you don’t fancy the traditional cold Christmas bath, don a wetsuit to observe the sublime seabed and enjoy the fruits of your harvest on board your boat. Your driver is bound to know the best addresses.
